The Start of Summer!

Thank you once again for parents and families who joined us on the last day of school as well as parents who brought snacks for our classes to enjoy. Ms. Yong and I really appreciate all your support this year to help enrich the students' learning experience. 

Summer Precept

As you continue to enjoy the summer and the beautiful weather, students please take time to reflect on their journey and their adventures. Some of you maybe relaxing at home, visiting family and friends, traveling, attending special events, and/or going to camps, please take time to write and share your experiences. 

Summer Reading

Calgary Public Library has an exciting Summer Reading Program for kids! Also, Raz-Kids continues to be available for students to access over the summer holiday. Your child must enjoy reading their favourite literature right now. June 24

Important Information:
- Monday June 25th is Sport Day. We will be having our CJP Sports Day and students are encouraged to dress for the weather.
- Thursday June 28th is the last day of school and it is a full day. Students will need to bring a lunch.
- Throughout the week, students will be taking their things home. On the last day of school, please prepare your child to carry their projects and indoor shoes home.
- *Please return all library books! 

Room 20/21 Celebration of Learning:
Families are invited to join us in our classroom celebration where students will be sharing their final projects with you. It will be from 11:00am -12:10pm. Students are welcome to bring healthy snacks to share with the class. If you would like to attend, please let one of the teachers know.

Mrs. Cuthbert shared an owl feather with us, which is connected to our Science unit.

Music Sharing Class

Room 20 and 21 will be having their last Music Sharing Class on Wednesday, June 20. Please remember to come prepared with what you will need to perform!

Important Dates and Information
- Sports Day on June 25th.
- Last day of school is June 28th. It is a full day. We would like to invite all parents and families to our classroom celebration to share students' work with you. We would love to have you in our space from 11:00am to 12:05pm where we can share our experiences with you. Please let your teacher know if you would be able to attend.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M)
We hope you have an awesome weekend. This week has been full of our STEM challenge where students get to design and build using recyclable materials. They are using these materials to construct an object that can hold things or has movable parts.

Language Arts
Students have been learning about poetry and studied the structure of Haiku. They have been writing haikus in class and went outside in the Discovery Garden to gain inspiration. We read the book Wabi Sabi in order to understand the format and technique that goes into writing a haiku.

 

Library
Mrs. Cuthbert is retiring at the end of this school year. She would like to thank all the students who returned the books on time. This week, the students had the experience to touch an owl's feather.

Stampede Breakfast:

Thank you parents and families for attending our annual Stampede breakfast. Thanks to a wonderful group of volunteers who helped out to make this a successful event.

Science - Animal Life Cycle:

This week, students have been learning about the different animals, how to care for them, and the effects of human impact. Throughout the week, these junior scientists studied the life cycle of a frog, learned about endangered animals, and participated in exploration centres on different types of animals needs and care. Please talk to your child on what they learned this week such as:
- What impact do people have on animals?
- What animals did they learn about?
- How does the environment change from an egg to a frog?
- Provide details about some of the habitats they studied in class.


Literacy:
This week we had a guest from Calgary Public Library to talk to us about the exciting summer reading program. Each child had a little brochure about it and obtaining a library is free! For more information, please visit Calgary Public Library

Division 2 Drama Production of "Timber"

We have an exciting drama production of 'Timber' on Wednesday, June 6th. Families are welcome to attend and it starts at 6:30pm. 

Students are are part of the production will be asked to come to the school at 6pm on Wednesday. 

There will also be a morning performance of the play at 10:00am on Wednesday, June 6th for parents and families to attend. See you there!

Bike to School

Just a reminder that CJP will be participating in Bike to School Day on Tuesday June 5. Students are invited to participate by biking from home to school or driving closer to school and biking the rest of the distance. Bike to School Day helps students become active and engaged with the outdoors. It is a school project that encourages students to build a healthy lifestyle while having fun! If your child is choosing to participate please ensure their bike is clearly labeled with their first name, last name and room number. Students will be storing their helmets inside their classrooms. Please do not bring bikes in through the front doors. There will be two outside doors connected to the gym for students to use. Grades K-3 will enter through the west door (closest to staff parking lot) with their bikes. Please be courteous to staff by not parking in the staff parking lot. The other entrance for grade 4-6 will be the door closest to the front entrance of the school facing Northmount drive. Both doors will be marked with a sign and pylon. The students will enter their door and drop their bikes off inside the gym by their designated classroom spot marked with a number. Please note which door your child takes their bike in, they will be exiting through this door at the end of the day to meet you outside. Due to the volume of people participating, it would be beneficial for the students to independently bring their bike in and out of the gym. Teachers will be assisting students in parking their bikes indoors.

Dear CJP Students and Families,

The Me to We Club students are organizing a outdoor “CJP Fair” on Monday June 4^th. The objective of this fair is to raise money for Education in Sierra Leone. Please visit the following website to find out more information:

The Me to We Club students have organized some very fun games and activities, including tug-of-war, splish splash shoot, drip drip drop, water pong, pin the moustache on the grandma, bean bag toss, cup target game, face painting and tattoos, and popsicles. Please help us meet our goal by giving your child change (not pennies) to bring to school on Friday June 1^st (to avoid students forgetting to bring it on Monday!) so they can participate in the fun and games. Games will cost between 25 cents and 1 dollar. Please bring change as bills are time consuming for the students to change.

We’re ever so lucky to have Family Squeezed donating 600+ popsicles. The popsicles will be $2.00 each with all funds going towards Education in Sierra Leone. We will have chocolate fudge, cotton candy, and dairy free raspberry. Thank you Family Squeezed for your wonderful generosity!

Updated Information and Dates
- Calgary International Children Festival ends on May 26th. If you have time, please take a look at our artwork that is located outside between the Arts Common and the Olympic Plaza in downtown.
- May 30th is school open house. Please check the school website for more information.
- May 31st is the Volunteer Tea at 9:30am. If you are able to attend, please let us know by Monday 28th the latest.
- June 1st will our class assembly. Families are welcome to come. It starts at 9:30am.


Health:
Starting on Monday, Grade 4s will start the Human Sexuality program and Grade 3s will be learning about wellness and decision-making. If you have a child in Grade 4 and wants them to participate in the program, please do not return the form. If you DO NOT want your child take part, please return the form to us by Monday May 28th in the morning.   

Math:
Instead of students writing in their weekend journal, they have a math activity to work on this weekend. Please return it on Monday to reinforce their learning next week.

Bike to School on June 5th

We only have 13% of the volunteers needed to host this event.

Social Studies: 

Students are not only finished their Social Studies Unit: Alberta Celebrations and challenges, but they are finally finished their kidfest panels! All 8 are looking fantastic, great work everyone. Thank you to the volunteers for coming in and helping us. Kidfest will be happening Wednesday May 23rd-Saturday May 26th. If you want to check it out either come to our assembly or come to Kidfest.

In Physical Education, students participated in incorporating math concepts to movement. They made connections to fractions, perimeter, estimation, and shapes. 


1. Which half (1/2) of a bag would you prefer? Which container of soda would you prefer half (1/2) of? Can you explain how a half can be different?

Science:
This week students learned how seeds travel and parts of a plant. Please ask your child what they learned about plants.
