Science

Thank you all parent volunteers for helping all Grade 3/4 class with making a metamorphic rock as part of the rock cycle. Students have the opportunity to explore the creation of metamorphic rocks through crayons. Please ask your child the following:
- What is a rock cycle?
- What is an igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock?

Celebration of Learning

CJP's next Celebration of Learning is happening this Wednesday, February 28th from 6:30pm-8:00pm.  Students and their families are invited to attend an evening of fun, learning, and inspiration.  This celebration's theme is "Growing a Community of Learners," and classrooms throughout the school will host a variety of activities that are designed to encourage learning through games, play, discussion, and exploration.  There will be a variety of math and literacy activities, critical thinking tasks, Indigenous studies, current events explorations, Science inquiries, and much more!  We hope that you can join us in celebrating the amazing learning that happens every day!

Pile it On: A Multiplication Game

This game provides an excellent demonstration of how multiplication works. First, players roll the die twice to find numbers for their multiplication fact. Then, they place cards in piles to create a visual representation of each fact. When solving their problem, players can count the cards or use the multiplication facts they already know. As patterns appear within the game, players will gain a better grasp on multiplication.

What You Need:
One deck of cards  (or blocks, counters etc.)
One die (Make your own.)
A score sheet for every player
Pencils

What You Do: 1. On a player's turn, they roll the die twice. Their first roll indicates how many piles they must make. Their second roll tells how many cards to place face down in each pile. 2. The player will then create those piles, add up the total number of cards used (either by counting them or by using multiplication), and record their score. 3. Play for ten rounds. The person who uses the most cards total is the winner.

Book Fair Dates
Both classes on the 27th and 28th will have an opportunity to purchase and look at books on these days. Students can bring money on both days. Thank you to all the parents who are volunteering and making this happen!

Pink Shirt Day
On February 28th students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt in order to show that bullying is not tolerated in their school community. If your child does not have a pink shirt they may wear red. Below are two links that you can check out for more information. There is a difference between bullying vs being mean/rude so it's important to have those conversations.

Help Needed: Rocks and Minerals

Dear Parent volunteers,

The Grade 3/4 classes are studying Rocks and Minerals and will be doing an experiment that requires the use of a stove and oven.  We are looking for parents to volunteer on February 20th and 22nd (approximately 4 volunteers each day) for either a half-day (9:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00) or a full day. If you are available to volunteer on either or both of these days, please let us know what day and morning or afternoon you can help out.

In order to complete this experiment we are looking for donations of crayons (new or used) and aluminum foil to help us recreate igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary replicas.

Please email your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Ms. Howard, Ms. Nielsen, Mr. Gustafson, Ms. Betty, Ms. Yong, and Ms. Ma

Accountability Pillar Survey

Each year in January, Alberta Education sends an important survey to all parents and guardians of students in Grades 4, 7 and 10. The survey is called the Accountability Pillar Survey. In February, students in Grades 4, 7 and 10 and all teachers completed their surveys online at school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school.

Your voice matters. It is very important that families complete the survey and return it to Alberta Education. The results are used to assess satisfaction with the quality of education in our schools, and the CBE uses the information to improve teaching and learning for your children. When filling out the survey, if you don't know the answer, simply proceed to the next question.

Alberta Education and the CBE thank you for filling out and returning the parent Accountability Pillar Survey. You can mail it back to Alberta Education free of charge, or simply return it to your child's school.

October Precept

This weekend for homework, students shall be writing a paragraph or journal entry in their Weekend journal based on a Wonder precept. Students are explaining what they think the precept means. Below is the precept.

“Your deeds are your monuments.”—Inscription on an Egyptian tomb

In order to brain storm ideas ask yourself these questions:
1. What is a monument? Why are they important?

2. What does the word deed mean? Are there other words similar to it?
3. How are your deeds a monument? What would you want to be remembered for?

Me to We Club Fair Day

The Me to We Club students are organizing a “CJP Fair” on Tuesday, February 13th. The objective of this fair is to raise money for the pillar we are supporting this year: Education in Sierra Leone. Please visit the following website to find out more information: http://www.freethechildren.com/international-programming/our-model/

The Me to We Club students have organized some very fun games and activities, including a target shooting game, Nerf shooter game, relay races, pin the penguin, a hockey shooting game, and a beanbag toss challenge. Please help us meet our goal by giving your child some change (not pennies) to bring to school on February 13 so they can participate in the fun and games. Games will cost between 25 cents to 1 dollar. We do not currently have change on hand as we recently made a donation to the bank. NO BILLS PLEASE.

Thank you,
Me to We Club
