Hello Families,
Last night's Student-led conference was a great success. Thank you parents and guardians for coming in and allowing your child to show you the work that we have been doing in class. School will resume on April 3, 2018. In the meantime, students are encouraged to do one weekend journal entry with details and play math games.
Starting on April 6th, we have SoundKreations coming into our school to do a dance residency with us. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and they may be more hungry and thirsty than usual. Please consider bringing a water bottle and a bigger snack during the days we have SoundKreations with us. Thank you!
Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Science: Rocks and Minerals
As we wrap up our Rocks and Minerals unit, we have invited Mr. Gray to come back to our classrooms today to share our findings as well as asking more questions related to rocks. Students were fascinated by matter from space affects the rock cycle. We really appreciate Mr. Gray's expertise and spending his time with us.
Weekend Journal
This weekend, students will be bringing home their Weekend Journal in order to write about a Wonder precept they have chosen. Next week, in the gymnasium, we shall be watching the movie Wonder on the last day of school before Student Led Conferences and Spring Break.
Their journal entry is based on the following precepts below in blue. Students chose one to write about. They will write about what the precept means and what the precepts means to them or how they connect to it. They can elaborate on their thinking with descriptions, examples and connections either to the book or something they have experienced. Students should be writing at least 5 sentences minimum. In order to show an in-depth understanding of the precept it is encouraged students write more than five sentences and take their time to understand what the precept means.

Evergreen Theatre

Evergreen Theatre came into our school today in order to perform "The Sinking Island". Katie Swells is one of the best young sailors on Storm Island Nova Scotia. After years of hard work and getting to know a sailboat, she’s finally ready to be a part of Storm Island’s biggest sailing race; The Big Circle. But things take a turn when Katie returns home from vacation and discovers that The Big Circle has been cancelled. Her best friend Sam the Seal tells her the water is rising off the island, making the race unsafe for young sailors. Determined to prove herself, Katie sets sail to try the race on her own, followed by a worried Sam. The Sinking Island is a funny and thoughtful nautical adventure that shows how our changing oceans affect the world around us.

Some of the concepts that could be discussed, that learned through the play are:
-Climate Change
-Paris Agreement

Take Home Math Game: Ring
your Neck
- One deck of
cards for each group. (Jokers = 0, aces = 1, jacks = 11,
queens = 12, kings
= 13)
- One record sheet
for each player/team.
- One calculator
for each group. (if necessary)
Rules and Play
1.
This
is a strategy game that uses addition.
2.
The
object of the addition game is to earn the most points.
3.
Play
begins with the dealer placing a well-shuffled deck, face down in a pack in the
center of the playing area. The dealer
then places 13 cards, face down, in a circle or necklace.
4.
Players/teams
take turns picking up 1 or 2 cards at a time.
Play must proceed counterclockwise from the starting point to the
finish. Scores are recorded after each
play. In addition games, scores for a
turn are the sum of the face value of any cards that are drawn. Scores are cumulative. For example if a player selected one card on
the first round and it was a jack, the score for that turn would be 11 and the
running score would be 11. Players/teams also receive a bonus of 50
points for taking the last card. A
new set of 13 cards is dealt for each game.
5.
In
addition games all players/teams start with a score of 0. The person/team with
the highest final score wins. In this game, card values are used to add the
score successively.
Variations
·
Change
the number of cards in the circle. For
example, use twenty-one cards.
·
For
younger players use a smaller set of cards.
Also note face cards can be removed or given a value of 10 and
operations restricted to addition or subtraction.
