Take Home Math Game: Ring
your Neck
- One deck of
cards for each group. (Jokers = 0, aces = 1, jacks = 11,
queens = 12, kings
= 13)
- One record sheet
for each player/team.
- One calculator
for each group. (if necessary)
Rules and Play
1.
This
is a strategy game that uses addition.
2.
The
object of the addition game is to earn the most points.
3.
Play
begins with the dealer placing a well-shuffled deck, face down in a pack in the
center of the playing area. The dealer
then places 13 cards, face down, in a circle or necklace.
4.
Players/teams
take turns picking up 1 or 2 cards at a time.
Play must proceed counterclockwise from the starting point to the
finish. Scores are recorded after each
play. In addition games, scores for a
turn are the sum of the face value of any cards that are drawn. Scores are cumulative. For example if a player selected one card on
the first round and it was a jack, the score for that turn would be 11 and the
running score would be 11. Players/teams also receive a bonus of 50
points for taking the last card. A
new set of 13 cards is dealt for each game.
5.
In
addition games all players/teams start with a score of 0. The person/team with
the highest final score wins. In this game, card values are used to add the
score successively.
Variations
·
Change
the number of cards in the circle. For
example, use twenty-one cards.
·
For
younger players use a smaller set of cards.
Also note face cards can be removed or given a value of 10 and
operations restricted to addition or subtraction.
